2012 HARMONY SONGWRITING COMPETITION
RULES

General Rules

The following information describes how to enter the Harmony Day Songwriting Competition (‘Competition’). By entering the Competition each entrant agrees to be bound by these terms and conditions.

Songs

Songs must express the theme of the competition (“It's up to You and Me”) but need not include any of these words

  • Songs (both lyrics and music) must be original.
  • Songs may be entered in any one of four categories:
    • Category 1 – Pop, Rock and Country
    • Category 2 – Jazz and Blues
    • Category 3 – R&B, Rap and Hip Hop
    • Category 4 – Indie, Folk, Choral and Classical
  • Where an entrant is uncertain of the appropriate category for his or her song, the song may be submitted on the basis that the judges will determine the appropriate category..  The judges also have the right to reclassify a song if they think it necessary
  • The judges may reject any entry that they consider to contain inappropriate language or sentiments
  • Maximum length is 4 (four) minutes

Entrants

  • All entrants must attend a secondary school in Australia (i.e. school years 7 to 12) at the time of entry into the Competition
  • Songs do not have to be performed by the songwriter(s), but the performer must be enrolled in a high school at the time of recording.  The performer, if he or she is not the songwriter, does not qualify for a prize
  • Songs can be written by more than one person (for instance someone who writes the lyrics and someone who writes the music).  In such a case, any prize(s) awarded will be shared equally between the songwriters

  • Songs must be submitted on CD and must be accompanied by a copy of the lyrics
  • Composer’s name and date of birth MUST be printed clearly on the actual CD
  • While the quality of the recording will not be a part of the judging criteria, songs must be clearly audible to the judges
  • Entrants may enter up to 3 songs
  • There is no entry fee
  • All entries must be received no later than 8 April 2011  or such later date as the judges may determine, to be eligible for judging in the Competition
  • All entrants and, where appropriate their parents or guardian, will be required to sign a form  stating that the song is written by them and granting a license to the Harmony Day Songwriting Competition Committee to use or make a sound recording of the song
  • For the removal of doubt, entrants will retain all copyright and other intellectual property rights in any song entered by them in the Competition
